Lockout/Tagout Safety |

Approximately 3 million workers service equipment and face great risk of injury if lockout/ tagout (LOTO) is not properly implemented. Compliance with OSHA’s Lockout/Tagout Standard, 29 CFR 1910.147, prevents an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries each year. Workers injured on the job from exposure to hazardous energy lose an average of 24 workdays for recuperation.

LOTO is a set of procedures designed to reduce the risks of injury due to the accidental activation of machinery or equipment during servicing or maintenance. These procedures require authorized employees to disconnect the equipment being serviced from the power source.

Employers are required to provide special training for employees who are involved with LOTO or work with equipment that might be locked out or tagged out to ensure the safety of all employees. The LOTO procedures must be reviewed at least once a year by the employer.

Locks and tags must meet certain criteria before being used in the lockout/tagout procedure. These criteria ensure the lock or tag cannot be removed without the knowledge of authorized employees. There are many different circumstances that may alter the LOTO procedure, such as group lockout/tagout, when an outside contractor performs lockout/tagout or an employee is not available to remove lock or tag among others. Employees must know what to do in such circumstances.

Employees need to be properly trained in Lockout/Tagout procedures.
